A Hawke’s Bay beachfront piece of land listed on TradeMe with a starting bid of $1 is capturing global attention. Situated in the coastal hazard zone of Haumoana, a suburb in Hastings, the land faces the risk of high seas and erosion, resulting in the sea claiming half of the property. Building on the site is restricted, and any potential buyer must submit plans to the council for approval, with no guaranteed outcome.
Fiona Mackenzie, a Bayley real estate agent, explained that the property owner, inspired by a past plan to build a restaurant on the site, decided to have a playful approach to the sale. Despite generating substantial interest, including inquiries from around the world, overseas buyers face restrictions due to the coastal location, requiring Overseas Investment Office (OIO) consent.
Mackenzie shared that the property has received over 12,000 views on TradeMe, with inquiries coming from Australia, Singapore, the UK, the US, Germany, and India. The upcoming auction, scheduled for 12 pm on February 9, has sparked curiosity about the final sale price, as the property lacks a dwelling, making it challenging to predict but expected to surpass the initial $1 reserve.
