  • The Christchurch City Council has taken 30 property owners to court for failing to pay their rates, as the debt spirals upwards.

The amount of unpaid rates owed by Christchurch property owners has jumped 12 per cent in a year. The council and Environment Canterbury are owed $11.5 million in unpaid rates, up $1.26m since June 2015.
