Kāinga Ora has confirmed a plan to cut 310 roles, slightly lower than the 321 initially proposed in September. This brings the total job losses at the agency to over 500 for the year. The agency has merged its urban planning, housing delivery, and construction units into a single “housing delivery group” due to reduced home-building targets.
The Public Service Association (PSA) has raised concerns about the future of social housing, emphasizing that there is no alternative strategy in place to address New Zealand’s pressing housing needs. With demand for affordable housing high, the PSA warns that the cuts could impact communities relying on state-supported accommodation.
Kāinga Ora’s restructuring efforts reflect its broader shift toward optimizing resources amid lower construction goals, but the union’s response highlights the risk of gaps in housing support. The agency’s decision comes as housing shortages continue to affect regions across New Zealand, with citizens and social service advocates looking for clear, sustainable pathways to meet growing housing demands.
