A tenant pocketed more than $60,000 in public money by sub-letting his rental to homeless people.
Zain Syed paid $500 per week to live at a property in south Auckland which he then rented out for an average of $3800 per week.
For 16 weeks of the tenancy he did not live at the home at 4 Miami St, Mangere East, according to a recently-released tenancy tribunal order.
Instead, Syed sub-let the home to clients of the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) – which pays for emergency accommodation for people who have nowhere to live.
