About 60 employees at two Distinction hotels in the Southland town of Te Anau have been laid off, a staff member says.
Distinction Hotel chain owner Geoff Thomson, from Invercargill, did not return calls on Tuesday.
However, the hotel staffer told Stuff a total of 60 employees from both Distinction hotels in Te Anau had been made redundant and just five employees had been kept on.
One of the hotels, the Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Villas, had remained shut since lockdown while the other, the Distinction Luxmore Hotel, would remain open for the next couple of weeks at least while Downers staff remained as guests, the staffer said.
Thomson’s plans for both hotels were unknown on Tuesday as he could not be contacted.
