If you could cut Melbourne in half, as you might a tree, what stories could its deep circles tell you?

The rings would flush out from the centre and the Wurundjeri people, past early-colonial settlement to include names like Barak and Barassi, Melba and Mietta.

You’d find bushfires seared in there and the course of the beloved brown Yarra as it flows to the sea. Held deep in the grain, too, are the great houses of Melbourne, of which only a handful survive. This is the story of one of them.
