A new type of property buyer has started to emerge in Melbourne as the booming population pushes family homes further away from the CBD.

They’ve been dubbed work-home buyers – people who buy a second property in the city to be closer to the office and avoid a congested commute. They still own a spread in outer Melbourne or country Victoria to spend their weekends and holidays relaxing.

Work-home buyers have recently become more prominent, with Melbourne’s growing pains leaving some in traffic for hours on end at peak times.

Lucas Real Estate director Mark Sutherland said the growth in sales was related to the gridlock traffic that has worsened as Melbourne’s population has boomed.
