Rising rents and an unprecedented shortage of housing, which is seeing hundreds of children living in motels, has left councils in Hawke’s Bay demanding action.
In December 876 people were on the Public Housing Register for the East Coast region, with the majority – 622 – from Napier and Hastings, data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development showed.
The Government is aiming to bring an additional 330 public housing places to the region by June 2022, through Housing New Zealand (HNZ) or community housing providers.
