• Transmission Gully – the road Wellingtonians have been waiting almost a century for – is beginning to look like a bit like an actual road.

About 100 labourers and 100 plant machinery operators are being recruited as the project team gears up for its first big summer of earthworks, which will see them move 2.4 million cubic metres of earth and fill by May next year.

That is equivalent to about 950 Olympic-sized swimming pools of dirt, or 48 pools every week.
