Amazon has said that it will open their first “Amazon grocery store” in Woodland Hills, California in 2020, per CNET.

This follows March reports that Amazon was looking to open several supermarkets in the US which would be separate from Whole Foods, which it acquired for US$13.7 billion in June 2017, but it’s only confirmed the Los Angeles-area location for now.

Few details are known about Amazon’s new grocery play, but the company did note that the store won’t deploy the autonomous checkout technology it uses in its Go stores.

The technology uses cameras and sensors to track what items consumers pick up so that they can just leave with their items rather than stopping to physically check out.
