Wendy’s Opens First Store in Australia: A Milestone for Burger Lovers
Wendy’s, the popular American cult burger chain known for its square patties, is finally opening its first store in Australia. This “exciting milestone” for burger enthusiasts will see the iconic brand launch its first Australian restaurant on Cavill Avenue in Surfer’s Paradise on Wednesday.
This Gold Coast diner marks the beginning of Wendy’s expansion into the Australian market, with plans to open 200 locations by 2034, each creating 30 to 40 jobs. Wendy’s is distinct from Wendy’s Milk Bar, which previously sold ice cream and hot dogs in Australia.

Aussies can now enjoy Wendy’s signature offerings, including the Classic Double and Spicy Chicken Sandwich, under the brand’s motto “fresh, never frozen.” The menu also features the Baconator, which includes two square burger patties, bacon, American cheese slices, mayonnaise, and ketchup.
Wendy’s is set to open in Australia, bringing its unique flavors to the Gold Coast. The hand-breaded chicken tenders, made with 100% Australian chicken, have been tailored for the local market based on feedback from Aussie diners. These tenders come in “homestyle” and a new spicy recipe, available in three-piece, five-piece, burger, or wrap options.

Dessert lovers can indulge in the Wendy’s Frosty, available in chocolate or vanilla, along with hand-cut fries served regular or loaded with cheese, chili and cheese, or bacon and cheese.
The announcement of Wendy’s arrival in Australia created a buzz on social media at the end of 2024, with eager fans flooding the comments with questions and excitement. Many expressed their anticipation for the new store, while some even made specific menu requests.
E.J. Wunsch, the international president at The Wendy’s Company, described the launch as an “exciting milestone” showcasing the brand’s global appeal. “With Flynn Group’s expertise and passion, we have crafted a restaurant experience that blends Wendy’s iconic square hamburgers and craveable chicken offerings with bold menu innovation crafted with Aussies in mind,” he said.
The Flynn Group, responsible for bringing Wendy’s to Australia, also acquired the master franchise license for Pizza Hut in the country in June 2023. Their portfolio now includes 2900 restaurants across seven brands.
Lauren Leahy, chief transformation officer at Flynn Group, emphasized the brand’s unique approach to the food scene: “The Wendy’s brand was built on doing things differently, from square hamburgers to being one of the most talked about brands on social media. Wendy’s embraces a challenger mindset, and we think Australians do too.”
