PHOTO: It’s a lifestyle choice: Anabele says the lack of a backyard encourages the family to get out more.

Anabel Pandiella, her husband Alex and two children Olivia, aged 8, and Henry, 4, rent a three-bedroom apartment — “it’s more of a two-and-a-half bedder, really” — in Sydney’s Neutral Bay.

“It’s a couple of k’s out of the city, it’s in a really nice area near [Sydney] Harbour, close to good schools. Alex and I have always lived in apartments. I think the only time I lived in a house was when I lived in share housing in my early 20s.

“We do sometimes think about moving out to a house, but I think sometimes that’s more a pressure we feel because our friends all live in houses. I actually really like living in an apartment, because we know where we all are. We do get under each other’s feet — it’s a small space, but I don’t have to spend hours cleaning.
