A Mid-century Modern house built in 1965 has won an Enduring Architecture Award in the NZIA Western Architecture Awards announced on May 10, 2019.
McCallum House in Whanganui was designed by architect Don McCallum, who still lives there. His house is in the Turere Place Modern Houses Precinct – a cul-de-sac notable for architecturally significant Modernist dwellings.
In announcing the award, the jury praised the modest, Modernist vernacular – the steel framing, concrete block walls, and ample glazing. “The architect established a house that sits easily in the landscape and enjoys a close connection to its surrounds.”
