Getting off the beaten track doesn’t have to involve long-drops and dehydrated meals.
With international travel off the table, Kiwis are being encouraged to discover the adventures to be had – and creature comforts available – in rural New Zealand.
Pre-coronavirus outbreak, the rural tourism sector was humming with overseas tourists looking for authentic Kiwi experiences.
But with that market gone until the borders reopen, accommodation providers hope New Zealanders will flock to their shearers’ quarters, historic homes and glamping tents.
Michele Connell, co-founder of Off The Beaten Track, an online business promoting privately-owned rural accommodation, said many properties had untapped potential for agri-tourism.
“Many rural landowners don’t realise they could share their piece of paradise and diversify their income – often without costing them anything additional, and simply using what they already own,” she said.
