PHOTO: TALL POPPIES – Described by one designer on an architecture website as ‘Mondrian after a few too many martinis’, this stunning house in Aro Valley has been sold for a suburb record $1.51 million.

A Wellington house that became a controversial architectural landmark amid the traditional villas of Aro Valley has been sold for a record price in the Wellington suburb.

The three-storey, 220 square-metre house, designed by architect John Mills, sold for $1,510,000. And it’s the point of difference that appeals to the new owners, who prefer to remain anonymous.

Speaking to Stuff, one of the owners said he and his wife bought it precisely because it was “not like everything else”.
