By the end of 2016 Sydney house prices had grown more than 10 per cent in a year. Saturday auctions across the city were turning into live theatre, crowds watching on as buyers pushed prices up hundreds of thousands of dollars above reserve for fear of missing out.

The market was hot and a UK-based flat-fee agency model called Purplebricks made its move.
