A man has stirred controversy by composing a letter urging the prohibition of revealing bikinis on Australian beaches, expressing discomfort. Ian Grace, a community worker and founder of the local charity Youth Music Venture, made this plea to Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate, as reported in the Gold Coast Bulletin on Saturday.

In his letter, Mr. Grace cited ‘protection’ as the reason for his concern, asserting that he does not believe young teens aspire to appear sexy and attributes it to current fashion trends. He emphasized the main issue as being the potential ogling by men. Despite acknowledging the unfairness of the problem, the Gold Coast charity worker insisted it remains an issue.

Mr. Grace recounted feeling uncomfortable during a recent encounter with a woman in a G-string, describing her attire as provocative. He argued that ‘bare bums’ are equally sensual as bare breasts and should be restricted similarly, proposing a ban not only on the beach but also off the beach, particularly in family-oriented places like public pools or theme/water parks.

Expanding his concerns beyond the beach, Mr. Grace expressed discomfort with tight activewear and revealing blouses. He criticized what he referred to as ‘crevice filler’ outfits, suggesting that such attire sends the wrong message.

Social media users responded strongly, with many accusing Mr. Grace of being the issue rather than the bikinis. Some challenged the idea, questioning whether men should also be required to wear shirts. Critics labeled his stance as sexist and outdated, emphasizing body positivity.

Despite the controversy, Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate stated that there are no plans to ban G-string bikinis from the area’s beaches, noting that attempting to restrict or ban such clothing often leads to increased popularity.
