The days of finding a cheap beach shack are all but gone since the pandemic hit Australian shores last year, but there are a handful of options that homes buyers can pick up for less than half a million dollars in and around beach towns along Australia’s coastline.

Buyers will have to get in quick as agents report the days are numbered for anyone daydreaming of snapping up something in time for summer.

In Western Australia, plenty of locals and interstate buyers have shown interest in a three-bedroom house at 9 Grant Street, Beachlands, in Geraldton.

With a price guide of $420,000, the Californian bungalow is situated on a peninsula with beaches to three sides of the home, according to selling agent Tish Longva of Elders Real Estate Geraldton.

“I call it the Fremantle of Geraldton,” Ms Longva said. “Beachlands is on a peninsula, so it has three beaches: it has one to the south, the west and the north, and you can walk to town within 10 minutes.”

She said they had sold several homes sight unseen to buyers from Perth, Sydney, Queensland and even New Zealand.

In South Australia, a tightly-held three-bedroom house at 36 Macquarie Street, Moana, has hit the market, drawing interested buyers from the eastern seaboard.

“We had a very busy open [home] and a lot of interstate inquiries because we are so cost-effective compared to the eastern states,” said listing agent Jackie Scott of Ray White Port Noarlunga. “The majority are from Melbourne and Sydney more than anything else.”

While there is no price guide due to its uniqueness, Ms Scott said buyers were expecting it to sell in the high $400,000 range.

“It’s within walking distance of beaches, shops, it’s very near public transport [and] it’s only a short drive to the wine regions of McLaren Vale,” she said.

The days of finding homes within such close proximity to the beach and for less than half a million dollars was numbered, she said.

“They’re running out, that’s for sure. Most of the others that have sold have ended up selling over the half-a-million-dollar mark.”
