Long-time Alexandra resident Julie Evans says she has never seen her home town “so vibrant”.
“When I was growing up you had the footy on Saturday and the matinee and nothing much else,” she said. “Now, on the weekends, the cafes are flat out, there are people sitting out the front of the hotels and people coming into town on their bikes from the bike trail.”
Since Melbourne came out of its second lockdown in October last year, Mrs Evans, who recently listed her family home for sale for almost $500,000, says the town has never been busier.
Melburnians who can work from home are selling their houses for high prices and moving to the town for a cheaper home and a better lifestyle, the local signwriter said.
Alexandra is in the Shire of Murrindindi in the state’s north-east, which had the steepest median house price growth of any region in Victoria in the year to March, Domain’s latest House Price Report shows.
House prices jumped 31.8 per cent to a median $560,000 in a year in the municipality, which also takes in Marysville and Kinglake. Prices are up an extraordinary 83.3 per cent from five years ago, when the median house price was just $305,500.
