The news that beloved Australian TV soap Neighbours could be coming to an end has had a huge impact on the national consciousness this week.

While it’s been tough for fans and, of course, the cast and crew who could lose their jobs, spare a thought for the residents of Pin Oak Court in Vermont South, also known as the iconic Ramsay Street in Erinsborough, where the soap is filmed.

Residents have been receiving a regular payment for allowing filming, which The Herald and The Age understand is anywhere from $33,000 to $50,000 a year, depending on how much of the home is filmed.

“Ramsay Street” homeowners have also benefited from a boost to prices, by as much as an extra 10 per cent compared to the rest of Vermont South, agents estimate.

In the past few years there have been some strong sales on Pin Oak Court, with one home that sold last year setting a street record.

Held in May in between Melbourne’s many COVID-related lockdowns, that sale saw 1 Pin Oak Court, also known as Toadie (Toadfish) Rebecchi’s house, sell for $1.6 million.

Barry Plant, of real estate agency Barry Plant, auctioned the three-bedroom home and said that the buyers, a Chinese couple, had no idea about the street’s famous history.

“The buyers hadn’t been through the house until auction day,” Mr Plant said.

Barry Plant Glen Waverley sales manager Carolyn Barton said at the time that the couple had fallen in love with the kitchen and decided to make the winning bid.

While the couple knew nothing about Neighbours, they were also unaware that the outside of the home would be filmed for the TV soap.
