But unless your property is likely to generate bidding competition, selling under the hammer may be a bad idea.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_2vba1\">\n<section class=\"_3PsH9 _1DCKj\">Winter has arrived early for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/link\/follow-20180501-p51n1m\">property market<\/a>\u00a0in Australia&#8217;s big cities. May is supposed to be a productive month for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/link\/follow-20180501-p51nfd\">estate agents<\/a>. The Easter and Anzac Day hiatus is over and vendors and buyers should be looking to close deals before the mid-year slowdown.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>Not this May. Volumes will reflect July numbers rather than May. For instance, in the first weekend of this month, auction numbers were down by a third against the corresponding period in 2018, according to CoreLogic. The drop will be especially pronounced in Victoria, where the Real Estate Institute of Victoria is expecting fewer than 2500 auctions this month, down from 4300 a year ago.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7770372_137=\"3128\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7770372_137=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-7770372_137=\"41619\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7770372_137=\"1\">It\u2019s not just a case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/real-estate\/residential\/desperation-mode-as-auction-volumes-halve-20190512-p51mgq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">auctions being out of favour<\/a>.
