A moratorium on lease-break fees and a rental hardship package will be among the proposed amendments for a $440 million rent relief package to go to NSW Parliament on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0six-month support package,\u00a0announced by the Berejiklian government in April<\/a>, will go before State Parliament in an emergency sitting after it was recalled to\u00a0debate the measures<\/a>\u00a0that aim to protect tenants from eviction and provide financial support for landlords.<\/p>\n

The measures include an\u00a0interim 60-day moratorium on evictions and require landlords to negotiate with struggling households \u2013 those who have lost 25 per cent or more of their income due to the COVID-19 outbreak \u2013 prior to seeking a forced end to a tenancy.<\/p>\n

Renters would be protected from eviction until the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) was satisfied with negotiations but, crucially, any unpaid rent would accrue during this period. They would also be protected from\u00a0being added to tenancy databases or \u201cblacklists\u201d for breaches of agreements resulting from the impact of COVID-19.<\/p>\n
