{"id":26910,"date":"2020-08-19T07:48:20","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T19:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/?p=26910"},"modified":"2024-03-01T20:49:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T07:49:56","slug":"staggering-number-of-households-behind-on-their-mortgages-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/staggering-number-of-households-behind-on-their-mortgages-new-zealand\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Staggering&#8217; number of households behind on their mortgages | New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PHOTO: <cite class=\"sics-component__caption__producer\">ROSA WOODS\/STUFF <\/cite>Borrowers making repayments on around 83,500\u2713\u200b home loans have now used the mortgage deferral scheme.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__intro sics-component__story__paragraph\">Thousands of households have missed payments on their mortgages, but haven\u2019t yet been brought into the home loan \u201choliday\u201d scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\">To help households cope with the economic impacts of Covid-19, the Reserve Bank and the big retail banks agreed on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propertynoise.co.nz\/reserve-bank-extending-mortgage-deferral-scheme\/\">mortgage deferral scheme<\/a> to allow struggling households to make lower payments on their home loans, or postpone making payments at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\">Borrowers making repayments on around 83,500\u200b home loans have now used the mortgage deferral scheme. It has been extended and will now run until March 31, Finance Minister Grant Robertson\u200b confirmed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sics-component__html-injector sics-component__story__paragraph\">But Reserve Bank data shows there were 10,905\u200b mortgages in arrears at the end of August which were not covered by the home loan deferral scheme, and the actual number may be even higher.
