{"id":28347,"date":"2020-10-16T10:43:02","date_gmt":"2020-10-15T21:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/?p=28347"},"modified":"2020-10-16T10:43:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T21:43:02","slug":"a-heritage-offering-with-lots-of-soul-at-leichhardts-ex-salvation-army-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/a-heritage-offering-with-lots-of-soul-at-leichhardts-ex-salvation-army-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"A heritage offering with lots of soul at Leichhardt\u2019s ex-Salvation Army hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PHOTO: 54-56 Carlisle Street, Leichhardt.\u00a0<span class=\"photographer\">Photo:\u00a0Supplied<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"first-para\">The phrase \u201ccharity begins at home\u201d took on a whole new meaning for the owners of\u00a0this converted Salvation Army hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they first moved in, people would slide money under the door or leave donations out,\u201d says\u00a0Ben Southwell\u00a0of\u00a0Cobden &amp; Hayson Annandale. \u201cWhen people realised it was being used as a residence, the donations stopped pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though short-lived, the offerings were a sign of goodwill the Leichhardt community felt for this circa-1916 building, which still bears a facade sign beneath the gabled roof and plaque commemorating its opening.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, it has been used as everything from a respite community to a dance hall. The owners, who bought it from the Salvos for $200,000 in 2000, were determined to preserve the landmark for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the owners bought it, it wasn\u2019t with a vision of moving in,\u201d Southwell says. \u201cThey started leasing it out to an antiques dealer. It also had a house attached to the back, which was subdivided and sold off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The antiques dealer moved out at a time when the owners were entangled in a complex development application for a new house in the eastern suburbs.
