{"id":30561,"date":"2021-02-10T08:50:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T19:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/?p=30561"},"modified":"2021-02-10T08:50:48","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T19:50:48","slug":"blacklist-proposed-for-nsws-lousy-landlords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/blacklist-proposed-for-nsws-lousy-landlords\/","title":{"rendered":"Blacklist proposed for NSW&#8217;s &#8216;lousy landlords&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PHOTO: Rachel Black is organising a petition to the NSW government for a &#8216;bad landlords&#8217; register.\u00a0<span class=\"photographer\">Photo:\u00a0Peter Rae<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Landlords who refuse to carry out necessary repairs, enter their tenants\u2019 homes without notice or generally behave abominably could risk being named and shamed by the NSW government if a new campaign to hold them to account succeeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Just as there\u2019s already a blacklist system for terrible tenants, there are now demands that a similar system be set up for lousy landlords \u2013 with property industry backing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI want dodgy landlords to think twice before trying to do over a tenant because they will be put on a database that anyone can access,\u201d said graphic designer Rachel Black, who\u2019s just launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nsw.gov.au\/la\/Pages\/ePetition-details.aspx?q=J0O7EaL8CIJH\/7Vjx+Xc8w==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">petition<\/a>\u00a0to members of the Legislative Assembly to introduce the system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIn NSW, a tenant enters a lease with no indication of what the landlord has been like in the past. Tenants don\u2019t have access to maintenance records, ex-tenant references or any tribunal dealings the landlord has been involved in and, by the time a tenant finds out there are maintenance or landlord issues, they\u2019ve already spent the time and money moving in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Landlords, however, can easily tap into the privately run tenancy blacklist, and often threaten tenants they will be put on it if they misbehave.
