linking the rise to the end of the state&#8217;s rental moratorium almost two weeks ago.<\/p>\n<section class=\"vB11C _1tnlo _1w6Cw _1pc-9 _2EbnQ\" role=\"contentinfo\" aria-label=\"key points\" data-component=\"KeyPoints\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/teaser\/100059718\">\n<h2 class=\"_3mduI _2gTdF _1deB8 jwLlj _1O6ck _1GKnS _2o9MN _1-RZJ\" data-component=\"Heading\">Key points:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"W8pqX\" role=\"list\" data-component=\"List\">\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">Rental vacancies across WA have fallen to\u00a0record, or near record, lows<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">At the same time, the number of rental property scams has risen<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">Renters\u00a0are urged to do all necessary checks before handing over money<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The moratorium ended on March 29, leaving many renters without accommodation and allowing\u00a0landlords\u00a0to raise prices and evict tenants with far fewer restrictions than had been in place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">But Consumer Protection WA said those fearful of the end of the moratorium were easy prey for scammers, with at least five West Australians left thousands of dollars out of pocket so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Among them is Varney, who lost $1,800 when she transferred money for what she believed was a bond payment for a property in Piara Waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">She told ABC Radio Perth it was a bitter blow after spending about seven months looking for a rental.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Varney\u00a0found the property at the beginning of April through Facebook Marketplace.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"100059692\" class=\"_2w-Eq _1w6Cw
