class=\"_1HzXw\">Artist Tania Blanchard had just finished building a new home studio when COVID-19 hit\u00a0and, as\u00a0the economy plunged into\u00a0recession, she began to feel nervous.<\/p>\n<section class=\"vB11C _1tnlo _3fXyV _19G7j _2wBlx\" role=\"contentinfo\" aria-label=\"key points\" data-component=\"KeyPoints\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/teaser\/100204806\">\n<h2 class=\"_1BrKg _1MOAE _3XvRm _3qPMD _1ehlr _2Od9e _582YK _2eB4R\" data-component=\"Heading\">Key points:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"_29Vqe\" role=\"list\" data-component=\"List\">\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">Auction houses say art sales have doubled since COVID-19 hit<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">An increasing number of investors are choosing art over property<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">New art gallery HOTA, on the Gold Coast, has welcomed\u00a028,000 visitors in its first month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">\u201cI was really worried that I wouldn&#8217;t be busy and people wouldn&#8217;t be able to afford art,&#8221; Ms Blanchard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">But her concerns were short-lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">With\u00a0people spending more time at home,\u00a0embarking on renovations and unable to book overseas holidays she witnessed a COVID-inspired renaissance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Cashed-up art lovers opened their pandemic purses and started spending big.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">\u201cSuddenly, I just became really busy,&#8221; Ms Blanchard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;It was a really crazy time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"100201422\" class=\"_2FoxC _3fXyV _19G7j _2rgXu\" role=\"group\" data-print=\"inline-media\" for valuable commissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;The commissions that I was doing &#8230; most of them were large artwork,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;People were willing to spend that money.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"_3fXyV _19G7j _2kQVP\" data-component=\"Pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;They thought,
