{"id":33250,"date":"2021-07-06T15:50:50","date_gmt":"2021-07-06T03:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/?p=33250"},"modified":"2021-07-06T15:50:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-06T03:50:50","slug":"elderly-man-sues-former-son-in-law-after-losing-250k-in-property-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/elderly-man-sues-former-son-in-law-after-losing-250k-in-property-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Elderly man sues former son-in-law after losing $250k in property deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PHOTO: The farm was in Sheffield in Tasmania&#8217;s north-west. <cite class=\"W-g-R _14nkQ _3BwtN _2eB4R _3qdyT _1SWGZ\" data-component=\"Figure__cite\">(<\/cite>Supplied: realestate.com.au\/Roberts Real Estate<cite class=\"W-g-R _14nkQ _3BwtN _2eB4R _3qdyT _1SWGZ\" data-component=\"Figure__cite\">)<\/cite><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">An elderly man who sold his home and moved to Tasmania with the promise of living out his days on a farm is suing his former son-in-law for allegedly reneging on their agreement.<\/p>\n<section class=\"tpUu7 jSIt7 _3fXyV _19G7j _2wBlx\" role=\"contentinfo\" aria-label=\"key points\" data-component=\"KeyPoints\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/teaser\/100255864\">\n<h2 class=\"_1BrKg _1MOAE _3XvRm _3qPMD _1ehlr _2Od9e _582YK _2eB4R _3Z8IO\" data-component=\"Heading\">Key points:<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"_29Vqe\" role=\"list\" data-component=\"List\">\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">Vernon Roy Scott says he\u00a0sold his NSW home for $250,000 and put the money towards the purchase of a farm in Tasmania at the behest of his then son-in-law<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">Mr Scott says he was promised that he would be able to live on the property for the rest of his life<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-component=\"ListItem\">He is now suing his former son-in-law after the property was sold and he was ordered to leave without receiving his money back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">In 2018, Vernon Roy Scott claims he was approached by his then son-in-law, lawyer Shaun Victor Kerrigan, about investing in a property in north-west Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Documents filed with the Supreme Court in Hobart allege Mr Kerrigan orally proposed the 77-year-old sell his &#8220;only residence&#8221; in Barraba in New South Wales and invest $250,000 from the proceeds of that sale into a farm in Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Mr Kerrigan denies these claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Mr Scott alleges Mr Kerrigan told him\u00a0to invest because he had a contract to live export Wagyu cattle to South-East Asia and would use the farm to raise and graze the cattle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Court documents claim Mr Kerrigan said he and his then wife, Justine, would purchase the Hamptons Road Farm using the $250,000 together with a further $650,000 from tax accountant and agent Salvatore Peter Cassaniti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">In exchange for the investment, Mr Scott claims he would have been &#8220;entitled to live permanently on the property&#8221; and could assist Mr and Mrs Kerrigan in setting up and operating the cattle export farm business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Mr Scott said he agreed to invest because it was his son-in-law, who was a lawyer, proposing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">In 2018 he sold his NSW property and claims he gave Mr and Mrs Kerrigan a $10,000 cheque for the deposit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">In September 2018 the Hamptons Road Farm was purchased for $900,000.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE VIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-07-06\/elderly-man-sues-former-son-in-law-over-property-deal\/100255862\">ABC<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOTO: The farm was in Sheffield in Tasmania&#8217;s north-west.
