A lockdown-weary man has forked out $280,000 for a tent on a remote island at the opposite end of the country that he cannot even see due to border restrictions.<\/p>\n

Chris Havre was searching the property market online during his sixth lockdown in Melbourne when he stumbled on the perfect escape 3,000 kilometres away.<\/p>\n

Prince of Wales Island, also known as Muralag, is the largest island in Torres Strait off the tip of Cape York.<\/p>\n

“It’s a unique part of Australia;\u00a0it seems to be a whole new world up there just waiting to be discovered,” he said.<\/p>\n

It is closer to Papua New Guinea than any major Australian city and has no electricity, water, waste or sewerage system.<\/p>\n

And that’s exactly what attracted Mr Havre.<\/p>\n

‘Pretty good deal’<\/h2>\n

Mr Havre’s new purchase sits on an 8,000-square-metre block of land and includes outdoor shower facilities underneath a\u00a0water tank, as well as a carport that doubles as a kitchen.<\/p>\n

While some people might scratch their heads about spending a small fortune on a glamping tent, Mr Havre considers it good value.<\/p>\n

“It’s a pretty good tent, but you’ve also got to look at the land and the location and I thought to myself, ‘that’s a pretty good deal’.<\/p>\n

“At the moment living in Melbourne, everything is so uncertain about what COVID is going to mean for us.<\/p>\n

“It’s good to know that if we are able to fly freely around the country, we don’t have to leave the national border to go to a place like that.”<\/p>\n

Cairns real estate agent Stacey Quaid sold the property to Mr Havre.<\/p>\n

“The owners had been using the block as their weekender for many years and they decided it was time to put it on the market and sell to someone else,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Most of the island is national park and this particular property is in an area called Long Beach, which is a long white sandy beach with a small reef in front of it.”<\/p>\n

It sounds like a true island paradise, but Mr Quaid said the beauty of the property was in what it did not have.<\/p>\n

“While it doesn’t have all the amenities that you would find in a city like Sydney, it does have all the things that you need to make a great home,” he said.<\/p>\n
