I asked for evidence and got sent a picture of four ants on the kitchen bench.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">With experiences like that in mind, he wrote to the real estate agent asking if the property owner could provide any references from past tenants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The real estate agent was confused.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-featured-img-wrap\"><a class=\"entry-featured-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/james-packers-sydney-harbour-crown-casino-tower-where-the-best-apartment-costs-100million\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-hoot-medium-thumb entry-content-featured-img entry-grid-featured-img wp-post-image jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.propertynoise.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/James-Packer.jpg?resize=460%2C270&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Crown\u2019s tower\" width=\"460\" height=\"270\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-grid-content\">\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/propertynoise.co.nz\/au\/james-packers-sydney-harbour-crown-casino-tower-where-the-best-apartment-costs-100million\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">James Packer\u2019s Sydney Harbour Crown Casino tower where the best apartment costs $100MILLION<\/a><\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Mr Cashman explained this would help him confirm the owner was a good landlord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">The agent wrote back again, politely rebuffing the request, and saying the owner was no longer in contact with past tenants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;At this stage\u00a0\u2026 I did get a bit cheeky,&#8221; Mr Cashman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;I was \u2026 keen to see how far I could push this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">So he responded:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"_2x50G _2X-83 g1U-R _155XJ\" data-component=\"Blockquote\">\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\"><em><strong>&#8220;So just to confirm, the owner doesn&#8217;t have any previous tenants they could get in touch with to write a positive reference for them?&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">This time, the real estate agent was blunt. They said the owner didn&#8217;t wish to contact previous tenants, and pointed out there was no requirement to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">Mr Cashman also received another email. His application \u2013 which had already been approved \u2013 had now been withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">&#8220;I found myself in this \u2026 unique position where I didn&#8217;t really need them. So I pushed back a tiny bit, asked for one thing that they usually ask of us, and they had what I would describe as a bit of a hissy fit,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_2X-83 g1U-R v-gc3\" aria-label=\"Social media embed\" data-print=\"inline-media\">\n<div class=\"e3ima\" data-component=\"Social\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/_tomcashman\/status\/1488381038535475200<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">As a comedian, he\u00a0has a sizeable social media following and\u00a0he decided to share the story with his followers on TikTok and Twitter.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"_3HiYf _2K_6X _1cBaI _2b-O4 _2yZBa _3I3Xh _2uBSR _10YQT _1lh6E\" data-component=\"Heading\">Renters have little power<\/h2>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">One of those who saw the video was Leo Patterson Ross, CEO of the Tenants&#8217; Union of NSW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">He said renters in Australia face serious competition when they look for a home and they don&#8217;t have much power to make demands of landlords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1HzXw\">According to Domain&#8217;s\u00a0latest vacancy rate report, the number of empty properties in most major cities is low, with the national vacancy rate at just 1.5 per cent.
