Services Australia\u00a0last week warned Aussies against the potentially dangerous text\u00a0and told recipients to delete it from their phone immediately.<\/p>\n

At the time, she was experiencing \u201call the Covid symptoms and so I wasn\u2019t really thinking clearly\u201d, she told\u00a07 News<\/a>, so proceeded with trying to purchase the kit.<\/p>\n

Shortly after sending payment, Chantel\u2019s phone began receiving calls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe phone rang twice, one straight after the other, so I thought it must be really important,\u201d she told the publication.<\/p>\n

The person on the other line was a British man who \u201cspoke quite well\u201d and told her she had been stung by a common scam that Westpac bank was going to protect her from.<\/p>\n

The man posing as a Westpac employee told her scammers were trying to take $1000 from her account before the bank intercepted the transaction.<\/p>\n

After raising her suspicions with the man that he could be a scammer, she was told to Google the number so she could see it belonged to the bank.<\/p>\n

Having secured her trust, the man then told Chantel she would receive a text containing a verification code she would need.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe text came up straight away but I was still a bit unsure, so he asked whether I had a landline so I could have called the bank to confirm,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Her next move was what saved her from catastrophe.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I told him, \u2018I\u2019ll hang up and call the bank now,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I heard a clunk and he\u2019d gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Him ending the call was all she needed for confirmation he was a hacker.<\/p>\n

Chantel was left shaken by the experience and has a new appreciation for how easily people can be fooled into giving away their savings.<\/p>\n

Westpac said it would never use verification codes when taking payments.<\/p>\n

Hacker poses as real estate agency<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Chantel\u2019s experience is one of thousands reported by Australians every week, including a West Australian woman who\u00a0last month revealed she lost more than $700,000\u00a0after opening one email.<\/p>\n

She was in the process of buying a property in Perth last month, when she received what she thought was an email from her settlement agent, who\u00a0asked for money to be deposited into a bank account prior to settlement.<\/p>\n

There were \u201cauthentic-looking documents\u201d attached, but devastatingly, the whole thing turned out to be fake.<\/p>\n

The scammers used a generic Hotmail email address with the agency\u2019s name and included bank account details to an account they had control over. They stole $732,000.<\/p>\n

Brisbane woman Anita Plath shared her story of being hacked in the middle of the night just over a month ago, waking up to a flurry of emails from Facebook.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was all done at 2.50am in the morning, so by the time I woke up and saw it, it was too late,\u201d Ms Plath told 9 News.<\/p>\n

The scammer reset Ms Plath\u2019s password, added a new email address and changed her security settings before wreaking havoc on Dibble Locksmiths and Australian Security Brokers (ASB) Facebook business pages.<\/p>\n

The cyber robber changed the profile pictures on both business to show women in racy outfits before posting pornographic content on the pages.<\/p>\n

Instagram mums targeted<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Overseas hackers have recently swindled Instagram mothers out of more than $20,000 in a foul technique that involved posing as them online.<\/p>\n

Brisbane influencer and entrepreneur Anna van Dijk, who runs an Instagram page with more than 28,000 followers,\u00a0had her identity<\/a> stolen\u00a0<\/a>after an email was sent to her with a link in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked 100 per cent legit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But after clicking on the link, Ms van Dijk was hacked and locked out of her account.<\/p>\n

The internet thieves took over her page, posing as the influencer while they asked her followers to invest in a scheme.<\/p>\n

It is estimated around $24,000 was transferred by local mums to the hackers.<\/p>\n
