Bed bugs, mouldy bathrooms, leaking roofs \u2013 younger generations in Australia are having an awful time and it is only going to get worse.<\/p>\n

When economics student Ella Cutts moved from her hometown of Byron Bay to Melbourne with her partner a year ago, her biggest hurdle was not her studies but finding a place to live.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the end, she settled on a \u201cshoebox\u201d in Preston, 9km outside of Melbourne.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the only one we could afford,\u201d Ms Cutts, now 20, admitted.<\/p>\n

The place was a bit of a \u201cmess\u201d but the real estate agent insisted it would be cleared up.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

When they arrived, strewn empty wine bottles greeted them, the bathroom was mouldy and the place was, bordering on filthy. It would take months of painful negotiations for some type of resolution.<\/p>\n

The real shock would come the next year, when two weeks before renewing the lease, Ms Cutts was told \u201cchanging economic conditions\u201d would result in a $70 dollar increase for the apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s tiny,\u201d she told news.com.au exasperated. \u201cAnd we just can\u2019t afford it. It\u2019s been really stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Already working, studying full-time and receiving the maximum government assistance she can claim to make ends meet, she\u2019s now looking elsewhere.<\/p>\n
