Photo: Nine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>It\u2019s fair to say that anything can happen on auction day, and Steph and Gian\u2019s certainly had it all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-7\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Auctioneer Tom Panos, who auctioned Omar and Oz\u2019s winning home in Gisborne in 2022, described the property as \u201cThe Chosen One\u201d, and with the most room wins and buyer interest, it was a fitting description.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-8\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Block regular Danny Wallis was front and centre, alongside \u201cMr Lambo\u201d Adrian Portelli, buyer\u2019s agent Frank Valentic and a surprise face, comedian Dave Hughes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe title=\"WINNER of The Block 2023 ???? An ambulance was called, while Eliza and Liberty\u2019s father, an Adelaide doctor, rushed to attend to the woman before paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-13\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>As she recovered and was taken away, auctioneer Tom Panos said the woman\u2019s mother had asked for the auction to continue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-14\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Once it resumed, Wallis teased with two waves of his paddle, but didn\u2019t make a bid. As the property was about to sell,\u00a0Portelli swooped in with a huge bid of $5 million, blowing the competition out of the water. But to get that much money over, I couldn\u2019t believe that \u2013 I didn\u2019t think it would happen again like last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-17\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>When asked how they managed to pull off two massive back-back wins, Hill pointed to the support of the team he worked with.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-18\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Speaking after the huge result Steph and Gian said they were lost for words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-19\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect that, we really didn\u2019t,\u201d Gian told Domain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-20\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cWe knew that to put ourselves in a strong position to win\u00a0<em>The Block<\/em>\u00a0we need to sell for four (million) because our reserve was so much higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-21\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cI think last year showed that you have to be willing to sacrifice everything and walk away with nothing and we are just so grateful that Adrian Portelli saw the value in our house that we saw as well.\u00a0 That\u2019s what everyone would hope out of an auction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-22\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Steph said when they were given their reserve price, the highest of all the houses, she was overwhelmed and didn\u2019t think they would manage a sale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-23\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cWe were like all good, November 4, House 4, 4 million, so we were manifesting fours and then he (Portelli) comes out with a five,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-24\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cThe Block has changed our lives and we are so grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-25\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cIt was the most eventful auction I\u2019ve ever done in my life,\u201d auctioneer Tom Panos told Domain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-26\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never, in 37 years of real estate, I\u2019ve never seen anyone faint during an auction and it was just weird that it ends up happening on\u00a0<em>The Block.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-27\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<h2>House 5 auction: Eliza and Liberty<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"placeholder placeholder-image\">\n<figure class=\"css-4qmyxz\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.akamaized.net\/domain\/image\/upload\/t_web\/v1699160412\/The_Block_2023_Auctions-101_quvmt3.jpg\" alt=\"Eliza and Liberty. Photo: Nine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>The much-loved sisters were up next, and expectations were high after the mammoth result of the previous auction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-28\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Again, Wallis, Portelli, Valentic and Hughes were in the room and Jellis Craig agent and auctioneer Nick Renna was ready to kick things off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-29\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Wallis again kicked things off, making a similar bid to the previous auction: $3,099,999.99.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-30\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Portelli jumped in with a bid of $4.1 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-31\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Valentic chimed in, asking: \u201cAre we on the market?\u201d before making a phone call \u2013 and, in a strange move, Portelli made another bid of $4.2 million, bidding against himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-32\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Valentic said he needed more time to consult with his clients but then announced that he had instructions to \u201csell it to Adrian\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-33\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Then, bizarrely, Portelli made another bid against himself, of $4.3 million. But I guess Adrian was doing that [bidding against himself for a reason] \u2013 you\u2019re trying to coax other buyers to come into the bidding, and there was a stage there where Frank was about to call his buyer so I guess Adrian\u2019s tactic was to get on top to stop that phone call from happening, which he did \u2013 and did really well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-36\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Speaking after the auction, the girls were visibly emotional.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-37\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cWe felt really strangely calm [ahead of the auctions],\u201d Liberty said. \u201cOnce reserves were told to us yesterday, it was almost like a weight had been lifted off. With the first two auctions generating massive results, could the momentum be sustained?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-39\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>At the Domain Listings Challenge, Portelli chose House 3 as his favourite so it was no surprise to see him there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-40\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Again, Wallis, Valentic and Hughes were in the room, as well as some other new faces: buyer\u2019s advocate Martin Fox snr from Whitefox Real Estate (not to be confused with judge Marty Fox who is his nephew) and David Deicke, who owns Melbourne Collision Repair Centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-41\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>This auction played out much more like ones you\u2019d see on any suburban street on a Saturday; slower pace, smaller bids and rising tension.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-42\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Auctioneer and co-listing agent Sam Inan of Belle Property accepted the first bid of $2.8 million from Valentic, which was $170,000 shy of the $2.97 million reserve. Fox was quick to fire back with $2.9 million and the two continued to counter-bid. Wallis jumped in with his first and only bid on House 3 of $2,960,000.50.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-43\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Fox was not here to play games and quickly countered with a bid of $2.97 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-44\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Valentic asked, \u201cAre we on the market?\u201d and\u00a0Inan confirmed, \u201cYes we are on the market and we are selling.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-45\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"placeholder placeholder-image\">\n<figure class=\"css-4qmyxz\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.akamaized.net\/domain\/image\/upload\/t_web\/v1699160466\/The_Block_2023_Auctions-134_kazu1w.jpg\" alt=\"Kristy and Brett. Right now, we\u2019d be high-fiving and hugging each other but unfortunately, that\u2019s not how it plays out on\u00a0<em>The Block.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-54\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Deicke, who had engaged the services of Valentic for the day, told Domain after the auction he was keen on House 3 until he realised who he was bidding against.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-55\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cI wanted the corner one and good friends of mine were bidding again and we realised we were bidding against each other,\u201d he said. \u201cShe said. \u2018Please can I have it?\u2019 so I thought I\u2019d do the right thing. We\u2019ve won it three times from position two, we\u2019ve been fourth twice and come third twice, so I really think auction order says a lot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-65\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cWith these heavy hitters, with so much money, they probably scare away a lot of [who] would be normal buyers for this demographic in this area, and unfortunately that then makes the buying pool very skinny. You see this disparity between someone making $1.65 million and someone maybe getting zero, and that\u2019s a bitter pill to swallow \u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-66\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cObviously you have to \u2026 have the right house in the first place, but for the contestants, it\u2019s an incredibly emotional process and if you\u2019re on the wrong end of that, or the right end, it changes your life, really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-67\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<h2>House 2 auction: Leah and Ash<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"placeholder placeholder-image\">\n<figure class=\"css-4qmyxz\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/res.akamaized.net\/domain\/image\/upload\/t_web\/v1699160542\/The_Block_2023_Auctions-221_loeue3.jpg\" alt=\"Leah and Ash. Only Valentic made a bid of $2.9 million, $70,000 short of the $2.97 million reserve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-69\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Moore left the auction to consult with Leah and Ash before returning to announce he was passing in the property at $2.9 million. I said, \u2018Not a dollar more,\u2019 and he goes, \u2018Copy that,\u2019 and that\u2019s exactly what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-75\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Agent Halli Moore told Domain that passing in the property was the right strategy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-76\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cPassing in at auction happens all the time and you\u2019ve got to make that strategy work if you think you can do better. We were all on the same page in terms of our decision to do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-77\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to run the risk of just sort of trickling to a reserve price when I think we can negotiate harder after auction so hopefully that plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-78\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Leah and Ash said they would continue discussions with the intended bidder and Valentic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-79\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>Valentic confirmed he had made offers on behalf of clients, including for Deicke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"paragraph-80\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"paragraph-html\">\n<p>\u201cI just hope [passing it in] doesn\u2019t backfire on these guys,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a genuine investor, very savvy, sophisticated from Brighton at $3.05 million.
