When 93-year-old Marika Sutherland decided to sell her Beaumaris house last year, she chose a real estate agency with strong connections to overseas buyers, particularly the Chinese community.

She was thrilled to be told the property could fetch more than $1.25 million and, in January, signed an exclusive sales contract.

But after the sale of her house, when her 61-year-old son looked over the fine print, he was horrified.
