Finalists for this year’s Australasian Auctioneering Championship (AUSTROS) in Hobart have been announced, showcasing the top auctioneers from Australia and New Zealand. Taking place from May 14 to 16, the event evaluates participants based on their auctioneering style, charisma, and ability to perform under pressure.

Among the contenders are a mix of emerging talents and seasoned professionals, including Anthony DeMarco, Paul Hancock, Paul Tzamalis, Prash Nayar, Nic Salter Harding, Jake McIntyre, Robert Tulp, Bronte Manuel, Clarence White, Luke Banitsiotis, Richard Kerr, Alec Brown, and Mark McGoldrick.

Paul Tzamalis, Director of The Auction Company, recently earned recognition as the 2024 REIV Senior Auctioneer of the Year. Expressing his enthusiasm for the national finals, Tzamalis emphasized the importance of earning the opportunity to compete and continually refining auctioneering skills.

Tzamalis emphasized the dedication required for success, highlighting his daily training regimen, which includes voice exercises, mental drills with apps, and vocabulary enhancement. He stressed that such skills are honed over many years but are crucial for competing at a national level.

While awards may not directly translate into increased business, Tzamalis noted the significance of industry acknowledgment in reinforcing professional relationships and confidence among peers and clients.

2023 AUSTRALASIAN AUCTIONEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Prash Nayar, an auctioneer with Perth Realty Group, shared his journey from novice to senior competitions and emphasized how auctioneering has enhanced his negotiation skills. Winner of REIWA’s Gift of the Gavel, Nayar underscored the comprehensive preparation involved, including script study and holistic alignment of body, mind, and spirit.

Richard Kerr, representing Apollo Auctions, highlighted the opportunity to raise the profile of auctions in Western Australia through participation in the championship. Returning after a decade, Kerr emphasized the importance of media exposure and consistent practice in refining auctioneering techniques.

In anticipation of the event, Kerr emphasized the significance of ongoing practice to deliver a flawless auction experience, focusing on every aspect from dialogue to formalities.
