A bankrupted builder has little prospect of paying back $300,000 he owes in unpaid tax, a Taranaki court has heard.

On Thursday, Clive Rex Baker pleaded guilty to 28 charges related to his failure to pay deductions from his employees’ wages to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) between August 2014 and May 2017.

The maximum penalty for the offending is five years’ jail or a $50,000 fine, or both.

The summary of facts, provided to Stuff, outlined how Baker employed staff at his construction business and up until 2014 had complied with his tax obligations to make deductions from his employees’ wages, declare these amounts and then pay the deductions to IRD on time.
