A barista selling a $4 coffee currently undergoes more training than a real estate agent selling a $4 million home in Sydney, says the president of the Real Estate Institute of NSW (REINSW).

But now that looks set to change after Parliament passed a series of far-reaching training reforms as a requirement for real estate agents that are likely to be rubber-stamped by the Upper House next month.

“We’re absolute thrilled,” says Leanne Pilkington, the president of the REINSW. “We have been working for this change for the past 10 years. The current training course to become an agent is just five days, and some training agencies, to attract business, were saying they’ll do it in four or even three.
