After years of talk, a resource consent application has now been filed for a retirement village near Whakatāne.

The possibility of paving the way to create a retirement village at Piripai, Coastlands, has been on the council table for some years and was the pet project of former Whakatāne mayor Tony Bonne before he retired.

The land for the subdivision was sold by the Whakatāne District Council for almost $8 million in 2017 with an agreement that 10 of the 40 hectares of the Opihi Block on Bunyan Road would be reserved for the long-awaited retirement village.
