Sandra Cowley didn’t intend to move out of Auckland but she says a dispute with her landlord left her no other option.
She, her husband Jonathan, and four children were living a Browns Bay, North Shore townhouse, which she said was “freezing”. They were paying nearly $700 a week in rent.
It was particularly a concern because their youngest child was born prematurely and had health problems.
The tenancy ended after a battle over heating and insulation.
