A fiery blaze on a prominent New Plymouth landmark was lit by relatives of a former owner as a symbol of occupation ahead of the historic site’s impending sale.

A 1.8 hectare section of the Blagdon Hill, or Maungaroa, site has been put on sale by owners Chorus for the first time in 80 years.

On Sunday whanau of the sites original owner, Te Kaho Heremia​, lit a bonfire to draw attention to the land sale, spokeswoman Pikikore Moore said.
