Harcourt’s inaugural Blue Friday, aimed at jumpstarting the spring selling season, proved to be a resounding success, marking one of Australia’s largest auction events. Over 500 properties were listed across the country for this charity event benefiting Beyond Blue, with 325 properties going under the hammer on Friday, including residential, commercial, and rural properties.

Harcourts CEO Adrian Knowles expressed the event’s success, stating, “The whole intention of doing Blue Friday when we did was to bring properties to market prior to spring and to give our vendors the best opportunity to get the best price. It’s been a massive success.”

The event garnered widespread interest, with hundreds of registered bidders participating in auctions held in various locations across Australia, resulting in a remarkable $79.3 million worth of property sold on the day.

Knowles noted the unexpected enthusiasm of buyers nationwide, with only nine properties out of the entire list failing to attract bidders. The day witnessed extraordinary bidding, including a lengthy 20-minute battle for a property in Queensland’s Bellbird Park.

The impressive results included the $3 million sale of a luxurious five-bedroom property in Buderim, along with three adjacent properties in Woody Point, Brisbane, each selling for $800,000 ahead of the scheduled auction.

The preliminary clearance rate for Blue Friday approached 60 percent, with ongoing negotiations extending into the following week.

Knowles emphasized the strength of the national housing market, driven by low supply, particularly in the eastern seaboard. He also highlighted the importance of Beyond Blue’s cause, which raised over $80,000 during the event, as anxiety and depression affect both industry professionals and the broader community.

Looking ahead, plans are already in place to make next year’s Blue Friday event even more substantial, with the intention to expand it internationally in 2024, including auctions in South Africa, the USA, and New Zealand.
