Mōkau

PHOTO: ANDY JACKSON/STUFF The town sits in the middle of two gorges on the three-hour journey between New Plymouth and Hamilton and everyone knows everyone.

After much of it being for sale, the tiny seaside town of Mōkau is alive and kicking this summer.

With businesses in the settlement booming, it now even has its own gym, with 45 of the roughly 100-200 person population already signed up.

“S..t yeah,” is what one of the builders behind the project had to say when asked if the numbers of gymgoers were better than expected.

Despite its tiny population, Mōkau, which sits along State Highway 3 between New Plymouth and Hamilton, can swell into the thousands during summer.
