When 39 Griffith Street, New Farm sold at auction for $7.75 million on the weekend, it made history as the most expensive house ever sold under the hammer.
As one of New Farm’s most prized riverfront holdings, it had attracted interest from all over the country. More than 100 people turned out to watch eight registered bidders duke it out, with the eventual buyer understood to have been Queensland rich lister and property developer Kevin Seymour.
It’s a significant result not just locally but nationally — in Melbourne, where up to 1000 auctions a weekend is not uncommon, the most expensive house ever sold under the hammer is a $9.75 million house at Toorak.
