Wellington city’s first KiwiBuild development was once so-popular that less than one-in-six who signed up got in. Now, at least 10 want out.
The 94-apartment Monark complex on King St, on the northern border of Newtown, is being built by developer Ian Cassels’ The Wellington Company and features 44 KiwiBuild property’s that were marketed as being completed in early-2020.
More than 300 people signed up to buy those 44 properties in 2019. The site of their future homes is now a building site, construction is expected to be completed in 2022, and, under Cassels’ urging, the Government has increased its underwrite for the project from $19 million to $40m.
National MP Nicola Willis has received answers to Parliamentary questions from Housing Minister Megan Woods showing three people have already cancelled their contracts to buy and a further seven are trying to get out of the deal.
