A Waikato couple managed to move into their first home within hours of the national lockdown.

First home buyers Shaun Murray, 35, and Karlie Porter, 30, had planned to get the keys to their new Te Aroha home on March 27, but when the government announced a national lockdown would begin on March 25 at 11.59pm, all plans were put on pause.

Murray said he and Porter were really excited to move into their very own home, but the process quickly became very stressful.

“As soon as the lockdown was announced my first thought was to get on to my mortgage broker and the lawyers about settlement,” Murray said, an operations manager for a Te Aroha goat farm.
