The owners of 18 Wellington buildings with cladding similar to that seen in London’s fatal Grenfell Tower fire have been told to seek an engineer’s fire assessment.

Wellington City Council has identified 113 buildings in the capital that are clad in aluminium composite panelling (ACP), which was linked to the Grenfell tower disaster in June 2017 that claimed 72 lives.

“For buildings with a significant amount of ACP with an assumed combustible polythene core, we engaged a fire engineer to carry out specific assessments … to identify if there were any characteristics of the building or apparent fire risks that might assist the spread of fire to the ACP cladding,” Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said.
