A historic Beverly Hills mansion restored by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston when they were still a couple has come up for sale at US$56 million ($78 million).

The estate designed by Hollywood architect Wallace Neff adjoins a property purchased by Aussie billionaire James Packer for about US$66 million last year.

Pitt and Aniston bought the 1115sqm house built in the 1930s for about US$13 million in 2001 and sold it to hedge fund executive Jonathan Brooks after splitting in 2005.

The couple had spent nearly three years restoring the home, adding chessboard floors in the kitchen, a private screening room and wood floors imported from a 200-year-old French chateau.
