Forget Russian billionaires and wealthy yachtsmen – the owners of some of the country’s most expensive real estate are nuns.

The Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Auckland owns 212 properties either fully or partly around Auckland.

That includes the Pompallier Diocesan Centre at 30 New Street in Ponsonby, a property that spans a full block in a suburb where 500 square metre sections are worth $5 million. It has a CV of $38m.

It also owns the Marist College and grounds in Alberton Avenue in Mt Albert.

Other properties associated with the church are those such as 26 Kitenui Avenue, owned by the Marist Sisters of New Zealand Trust Board, worth $2.3m. That same trust owns four other houses worth more than $2.5m in total.
