BAYLEYS DEVONPORT The house, in Huia Street, has a prime position overlooking the harbour.

Anyone who has walked, or driven down short, but steep Huia Street in Devonport will recognise this house.

Because, chances are you stopped and looked at this architectural wonder and maybe took photos  – it’s an Arts and Crafts masterpiece designed by architect Lloyd Bates in 1929 and singled out for its ornate stone walls, its cottage-style architecture and ornate leadlight windows.

Perched on the steep hill overlooking the inner harbour, it’s almost like a lookout post for Devonport.
