The new season Grand Designs NZ is back on our screens next week with a project that’s sure to tug at the heartstrings.

It’s a Christchurch story of the rebuild of a house extensively damaged in the earthquakes, but this is no ordinary house.

It’s the rebuild of the stunning Britten Stables conversion by legendary Kiwi mechanical engineer and motorcycle designer John Britten, who died of skin cancer in 1995, at the age of 45.

And it’s his own family that’s undertaking the massive rebuild of the stables, which were derelict when John Britten bought the property in 1978. The engineer had painstakingly converted it into a home where he raised his family and built his revolutionary V1000 motorbike.
